Never Look at a Pig The Same Way Again -- It's Hogzilla!

It's Hogzilla and not a Hollywood special effects thing. At least we think this hog is real... Can it be? Can you just imagine what that thing ate? What is really mind boggling is that a pig almost as big was killed in Georgia and someone is making a film about it. At least there was someone nearby with a tractor apparently to drag this thing from the woods...can we say without a doubt that this could only take place in the South? Soldiers Run In Iraq For Autism Awareness

American soldiers at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq are raising money to promote autism awareness. Ok, if they can dodge IEDs, brush the sand out of their teeth daily and still have the time to raise money for autism…well, what are you doing with your free time? They are supporting AutismSpeaks by doing the Autism Awareness 5K Fun Run on the base. It’s this Sunday with soldiers from the Army, Navy, and Marines taking part. Sheryl Crow Vs. Karl Rove

Sheryl Crow is picking on Karl Rove…Maybe because Sheryl is too smart to pick on “Danger Cheney?” So Sheryl Crow is on this quickie tour with Laurie David right now to promote global warming awareness. (Kinda like every other tour in music right now).

Crow and David made a stop at the White House to check out the annual Correspondents’ Dinner. They were excited to chat with Rove about America’s role in global warming, but Rove was much less excited. Rove is apparently uninterested in talking about climate change. Possibly “M.C. Rove” isn’t such a fan of Sheryl Crow’s music. But hopefully he likes to “Soak Up The Sun,” because things are quickly heating up in the world of climate control.

Their exchange, according to Rolling Stone:

“After asking the pallid political leader to “consider taking a fresh look at the science of global warming” things descended into high school cafeteria-style melodrama. After bantering back and forth about U.S. environmental policy (the girls reminded Rove that America leads the world in global warming pollution yet are doing the least about it, Rove shot back like a recalcitrant teenager, saying that China’s worse) Rove attempted to abandon the conversation and go back to his table. When Crow reached out to touch Rove’s arm, imploring him to stay, Rove short-circuited. “Don’t touch me.” “You can’t speak to us like that, you work for us,” Crow retorted. “I don’t work for you, I work for the American people,” Rove spat. “We are the American people,” Crow apparently reminded him.”

Now Sheryl, we know you’re single but you don’t have to act desperate by reaching out to touch M.C. Rove!

If you want to catch the reunited Police performing together at the Grammy Awards, remember they are opening the show! So have your butt planted in front of the TV when the show starts. This also means you can simply watch the opening portion of the show and move on. Hey – it’s going to be a long awards season. Tour rumors are circulating already but there’s nothing of substance to report. We’ll be right here to inform you if that changes!

Anna Nicole Smith dead at age 39
Fans across the world are saddened by the sudden passing of Anna Nicole Smith, who died Thursday at age 39 in Hollywood, Florida. Smith had been staying at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino all week and was found unconscious in her room around 2 pm Eastern; she was pronounced dead about two hours later at a nearby hospital. An autopsy will be done now on the starlet who always admired Marilyn Monroe and even resembled her somewhat. We may know within days the cause of her death.

Stevie Nicks is has a couple new releases coming up
Stevie Nicks is finally on DVD! She’s releasing Reflections – the Very Best of Stevie Nicks March 27. The CD will contain her solo stuff and her stuff with Fleetwood Mac like an acoustic version of Landslide, a studio version of Edge of Seventeen, Led Zeppelin’s Rock n’ Roll, the Deep Dish dance remix of Dreams and the original Silver Springs master from Rumours. Then there’s the DVD complete with 13 Nicks videos…a Peakerhead could get used to this sort of thing! Like good stalkers, we say thank you to Ms. Nicks for releasing all this cool stuff! For instance, you’ll be able to check out never-before-seen home videos of her during the making of the Bella Donna album. If you want to try your luck in Vegas next month, Nicks will be performing at Ceasars Palace March 20-24.

More Borat – very nice!
Sasha Baron Cohen will be back for a second round of Borat. The movie has grossed about $250 million worldwide and is a surprising hit in Israel, where Cohen came from originally. Though the film is filled with off-color anti-Semitic jokes, the language Borat speaks is actually Hebrew in an affect that gives Israelis inside jokes in their own tongue. Many Americans have been offended by some of Cohen’s shock humor, as well as the actual President of Kazakhstan who even launched a PR campaign to show his country in the correct light after he learned of the movie’s release.

Breaking news: Anna Nicole Smith is dead

Anna Nicole Smith was found unconscious today at 2pm Eastern in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Smith was rushed to the hospital, but CNN is reporting that she was already dead when found at her hotel. Anna Nicole Smith was 39 years old.

Heather here, blogging for Mary today while she's on vacation. Check out the new Peak scrunchy, which the Peak Patrol will be giving away while they're out and about. Perceived ambiguity of "that"

Each verse comprises two things that he would do for love, followed by one thing that he would not do. It is that latter part of each chorus that is the "that" of the title. However, some people misunderstand the lyrics, claiming that the singer never identifies what the "that" is that he is unwilling to do.[8] Indeed, Steinman predicted this confusion during production.[9] All Music Guide also misunderstand the lyric, saying that they "build suspense by portraying a romance-consumed lover who pledges to do anything in the name of love except "that," a mysterious thing that he will not specify."[6] They say that the mystery is revealed during the closing stages of the song, but do not observe that "that" is revealed in every chorus throughout.

Although some people assume that "that" is an exophoric reference to a sex act,[10] it is actually an anaphoric reference to the varying activities and feelings that are specified as antecedents in the lyric that the singer says that he won't do.

Meat Loaf says that the question "what is 'that'?" is one of the most popular questions he is asked.[10]. In his 1998 VH1 Storytellers special, he even explained it on stage using a blackboard and a pointing stick.

In his cameo in Spiceworld, he is asked to fix a toilet for the Spice Girls. He says that he would do anything for them, but he won't do that.

Jim Steinman, in an interview, states that the definition of "that" is fully revealed in the song in each of the several verses in which it is mentioned. He intended the "that" reference to be a "puzzle" which would be ambiguous at first, but which could be solved by attentive listening to the lyrics. [11]

Mary's Mashups!

I am hooked! Check out this wonderful thing called a mashup. It's basically one song audibly mashed into another. You take one song's vocals and pit them up against the music tracks of another and then you have a mashup. MTV sells CDs of mashups and DJs in clubs love to do a little mashup now and then. It's a refreshing way to deliver music we've already heard. Usually it's done with audio only, but I found this awesome videomashup of Oasis and Green Day:

So what do you think? Is this silly and obnoxious like the sound of two songs playing at once? Is this something only true audio geeks can appreciate? Is it modern technology run amok? Or is this an awesome new form of artistic expression? It's kind of fun to imagine what would have been had those Green Day lyrics really been sung up against the melody of the Oasis song... Mashups aren't really that new, by the way. This has been going on for a while. Most notably, rapper Eminem did a mashup by rapping his lyrics over Aerosmith's Dream On.

SIMPLE WHITE ENVELOPE

It's a long blog post (as in we didn't write it -- it came from a Peakerhead!) but definitely worth a read...

It's just a small white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmastree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through thebranches of our tree for the past 10 years or so.

It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas -- oh, not the truemeaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it -- the overspending,the frantic running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and the dusting powder for Grandma -- the gifts given in desperationbecause you couldn't think of anything else. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass the usual shirts,sweaters, ties, and so forth. I reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way. Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling at the junior level at the school he
attended.

Shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church.
These youngsters, dressed in sneakers so ragged that shoestrings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, presented a sharp contrast to our boys in their spiffy blue and gold uniforms and sparkling new wrestling shoes. As the match began, I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear, a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestler's ears. It was a luxury the ragtag team obviously could not afford. Well, we ended up walloping them. We took every weight class. And as each of their boys got up from the mat, he swaggered around in his tatters with
false bravado, a kind of street pride that couldn't acknowledge defeat.

Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, "I wish just one of them could have won," he said. "They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them." Mike loved kids -- all kids -- and he knew them, having coached little league football, baseball, and lacrosse. That's when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner-city church. On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and in succeeding years.

For each Christmas, I followed the tradition -- one year sending a group of mentally handicapped youngsters to a hockey game, another year a check to a pair of elderly brothers whose home had burned to the ground the week before Christmas, and on and on. The envelope became the highlight of our Christmas. It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning, and our children, ignoring their new toys, would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their dad lifted the envelope from the tree to reveal its contents. As the children grew, the toys gave way to more practical presents, but the envelope never lost its allure.

The story doesn't end there. You see, we lost Mike last year due to cancer. When Christmas rolled around, I was still so wrapped in grief that I barely got the tree up. But Christmas Eve found me placing an envelope on the tree, and in the morning it was joined by three more. Each of our children, unbeknownst to the others, had placed an envelope on the tree for their dad. The tradition has grown and someday will expand even further with our grandchildren standing around the tree with wide-eyed anticipation watching as their fathers take down the envelope.

Mike's spirit, like the Christmas spirit, will always be with us. May we all remember Christ, who is the reason for the season, and the true Christmas spirit this year and always. God Bless! -- pass this along to those friends and loved ones who you know are the givers who understand the true meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The silent auction is open to the public and you're bidding for a ride in a Phoenix Fire Truck that will be touring lights from the Arizona Republic's Annual Holiday Lights Map. The city of Phoenix will trade a ride in a fire truck or police car for a new, unwrapped toy or clothing item (size newborn to 8 year old boy or girl). Donations go to at-risk children at numerous Head Start classes, several homeless shelters, the Phoenix Crisis Nursery, the Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations.

Calling all golfers! On Sunday, October 8, 2006, you can make a difference when you support breast cancer research and funding with Team Freewalk. Registration is at 6:00 a.m. with a 7:00 a.m. Shotgun start and it’s happening at Western Skies Golf Club at 1245 E. Warner Rd. in Gilbert. (Warner and Val Vista.) It’s done in a Four Person Scramble that costs $360.00 per foursome, $90.00 per single player (will be placed into foursome, if room). That includes green fees, BBQ buffet lunch, golf cart and practice balls. Aside from getting that warm and fuzzy feeling you get from doing good, there will be prizes for really good golfers, you know – like yourself! There are prizes for 1st, 10th, 15th, and last place teams. Prizes will also be awarded for Closest to the Pin (Male & Female), Longest Drive (Male & Female) and a Las Vegas Hole .

It’s for a good cause!

Over 200,000 people will get the dreadful news that they have breast cancer this year and sadly, 40,000 of them will lose their lives to this deadly disease. That statistic as well as the personal stories of how breast cancer has touched the lives of the members of Team Freewalk is why we are rasing funds to support the research, education, screening, and treatment of breast cancer. From Tucson to Phoenix in just 7.5 hours!!

Oh sure, it's a straight shot up Interstate 10 for most people, but then you miss a beautiful drive through some pristine desert. It was just me and the 3 adorable children who love to spend hours together trapped in a small space and we all agreed to drive out Oracle Road to see Biosphere 2. Upon our arrival, the debate raged as to whether we hang around 45 minutes for the next tour to start or pay the admission and not be able to enter the facilities. As it turns out, by the time we gooped up with sunscreen and walked over to the living quarters and actual Biosphere 2 facility, we didn't have long to wait at all. The guide sure gave us looks though when explaining that only bottled water was allowed inside; absolutely no food. I got the hint and had the kids spit out their gum, heh heh. We departed the grounds at around 4:15pm and headed up the state road. I figured we'd enjoy the scenic route up to about Florence and then take that junction on over to I-10 and zip on home from there. What confused me were the mileage signs that kept telling me how far the town of Globe was, instead of Florence. Sure, I could've consulted the map. Except for the part where my husband had removed it from the van because who needs a map?! After almost an hour, I accepted the fact that I'd gone wrong somewhere, but it really was a beautiful drive. The 2 younger kids were watching Lion King instead of fighting and my teenage was playing with his phone instead of sighing of constant boredom. And, c'mon!...we wouldn't have to drive TOO far, would we, before a junction came along? When it finally showed itself, we were in Winkleman (and who names a town Winkleman, may I ask?--just kidding Winkleman) where my options were the mining town of Globe or the mining town of Superior. Well, I happen to know that Superior is closer to Phoenix than Globe is, but that wasn't good enough anymore. I stopped and bought a map.
I'd like to say it was smooth sailing after that, but I managed to overshoot the junction of US60 when we hit Superior. I was laughing so hard at my son's description of the movie he was creating in his own head that I ended up in a residential neighborhood while my 6 year old daughter whimpered in the back seat, needing to find a restroom. I guess this thread is long enough without going into the idea of flaming sahuaro arms landing on people in Barstow...a 14 year-old with an imagination can be an amusing thing when they're inspired by huge open pit mines that you drive past during 7.5 hour trips; let's just leave it at that.
We did manage to lose even more time when I jumped off the freeway in Mesa to find the Bajio Mexican Food restaurant that I knew was somewhere near the movie theater at Stapley and the US60. After about 30 minutes in the shopping center, we found it across the street. Closed for the day. Sigh. We settled for a Chinese buffet near home in the end.
So to sum it up: we checked out of the hotel at 1pm and arrived home at 8:40pm. And it was all good. Except for the big fight that broke out after Superior, but I made them all think of something they loved about each other and then say what it was and apologize. After that my 5 year old son led us in a rousing rendition of The Ramones "Blitzkreig Bop" and we all lived happily ever after.

The Story of George

This comes from an email I received from Peakerhead Ray who recently returned from Iraq:

A little history

I drove to Iraq with the 3rd Infantry back on 20 March 03. It took us 3
weeks to reach Baghdad. Along the way we lost several soldiers, 5 of
them I knew well. It makes it hard when you lose friends.

We arrived at the airport on 8 April 03 and we moved around till we
found a spot to settle in. We set up shop near the cargo side airfield
at the telephone switch building.

Shortly after setting up shop we found that we had a parrot hanging
around. No one could get near to it but we all tried. I finally got it
to eat and started feeding it. We named him George. We figured he
escaped the bird statuary at the palace next to the airport. I had seen
several exotic birds in the area and Saddam kept a small zoo at the
palace.

George and I became close friends and woke wake me up every morning
wanting to be fed. He would follow me around and even fly to me to be
pet. He loved having his chest feathers rubbed. I fed him by hand and
when ever I would sit down outside he would fly and sit on the back of
my chair. He did not do that to anyone else.

The unit that I supported left at the end of May and so George and I
were left on our own till the end. I left for home on 20 Oct 03.

The story of George takes a sad turn:

Obituary for 8-25-03 - It is with deep sadness that I must report that George the Parrott is dead. He was brutally murdered this morning sometime between midnight and 4 AM. An unnamed assassin known as “The Cat” carried out this murder. The cat was seen earlier in the day lurking about but was thought to have left the area. There have been several attempts on George’s life the latest being a month ago when he was ambushed by two pigeons while flying to his place of residents at BIAP. Several Iraqis reported that the attack was unprovoked witnessed the attack. This assassination was sanctioned by the local mob known as “The Brotherhood of Pigeons”. George leaves behind a very large family most of the overseas, none were available for comment. He is an OIF survivor escaping from his captures during the first days of the war. Local Iraqis and Americans alike are saddened by this tragic and horrific murder. The burial will be sometime today once all the remains can be gathered up. He was my loyal companion since April 15th. He was a good friend and he will be missed.

Memorial Day Weekend brought with it the annual Hockey Tournament here in the valley and what a weekend! I played with the Lady Wings and we took home the 2nd place trophy after a thrilling overtime in the championship game against Colorado. By Saturday night, my chin looked like I'd been in a bar fight, according to my husband, but the injury actually came after a collision on Saturday morning when I collided with a gal from the Calgary, Eh! team and when I hit the ice, it was my chin that took the hit. I'm thinking about getting rid of my chin guard. On the other hand, my chin might look even worse if I didn't have the guard!
Congratulations the Phoenix Replacements--another women's team in a different division--who took home the championship trophy and hats off to the players from all over the continent who came to our fair city to play a weekend full of hockey. All in all, it was a fabulous, exhausting weekend!

TEAM FREEWALK IS IN THE HOUSE!!

The Breast Cancer 3-Day is coming up in November, but the planning and the fundraising are NOW. I've adopted a team for this year's walk. It's Team Freewalk. Please check in here regularly if you're a supporter of cancer research (as if a person could be anything but!) and find out when we'll be holding fundraisers for the team. Check the comments section too, to see what Tracy and Tina add since they're our fearless leaders on the team.

My first big event with the team is coming up on April 25th at Maggie Moo's Ice Cream on Val Vista and Warner. The team will be out scooping ice cream for you and I'll be joining them with the Peak Promotions staff from 4-5pm, so please come on out and let me scoop you up some ice cream. The fundraiser will be going on all day long, so feel free to drop by earlier if that suits your schedule better. Most importantly though, come get some ice cream on Tuesday, April 25th. So, I'm in Vegas for the annual women's hockey tournament and I see these fliers about "Fight Like A Girl" Hockey/Breast Cancer T-shirts. I was about to just automatically order one cause they look cool, but decided I should find out just what happens to the money, you know? And I found out alright, thanks to Pam@elitemarketing.biz. This is about a woman named Sandra. She lives in Michigan and plays hockey on one of the teams that beat us at the tournament. I won't hold that against her. See, Sandra's fighting for her life. It's breast cancer and it's not giving up easily in her case (not that it's EVER easy, but I think you know what I mean). She's a beautiful woman who was diagnosed about 9 months ago, at the tender young age of 29. Here's what I got in an e-mail from her friend: " Since her original diagnosis, she had her breast removed, most of her Lymph Nodes (sp?) and they found that it had spread to her liver - (3 spots), the last tests taken - the larger of the liver spots grew larger. So, they haven't found a chemo drug that's working yet. Basically, she's still a giunea pig."
I'm told she's doing great emotionally, surrounded by supportive friends and is trying to work, take care of herself and take care of her 6 year old son. When I got to the part about the 6 year old son, I just let the tears flow.
Her friends are printing up these shirts and patches and giving the money straight to her and her son. I'm all over that and have already ordered a shirt and a patch.
Now I realize that there are stories like this all over the world, but I don't know those details. Since I know about this one, I want to pass it along to you. And I love the shirts.
